StudioFAQ

I have just opened a project in Studio 10/11 and it is empty. Please Help.

Here are a couple of solutions that may help you recover lost projects.

Solution 1: If both the .stx file and the grey folder (project folder) are present but just can't be opened or studio says it can't be opened, you only need to rename both the project folder (grey folder) and the .stx file.

Give them both a completely different matching name. (Note: You have to include the .stx in the file name if you have "Hide extensions for known file types" unchecked in your folder options. The way to tell is, if you see the .stx on your file name, then you have to include it. If you don't see the .stx extension, then you don't have to include it.)

Now double click the .stx file and Studio should open your project.

Solution 2: If the grey folder (project folder) is present but the .stx file is missing. Here is the creative part. Open studio and create a new project with the name of "My Movie" or "My Movie 2" or whatever is available. Save this project as is. No need to add anything to it. Close studio.

Now open your projects folder and find the "My Movie.stx" file you just created. Rename it to match the grey folder, ie... "My Project.stx". (See note above about file extensions)

Now double click this .stx file and studio should open your project.

You can verify that this works by doing this test: Create a new project in studio using the clowns video. Give it whatever name you want and save. (ie, My Test) Now close studio and navigate to your projects folder and delete the .stx file for the project you just created. (My Test.stx) (don't delete the Project folder, grey folder) Now open studio and create a new blank project with the name that studio wants to give it. (My Movie) Save it and close studio. Now go back to your projects folder, right click the newly created 'My Movie' .stx file and rename it to match the grey folder (My Test.stx). Double clicking this renamed file should now open the clowns test project. Now if both the .stx file and the grey folder are missing, you're on your own.

Hi! Thanks for your kind help! But unfortunately these renaming actions did not help in my case. I'm willing to try several ways to solve this problem, even hard ones. Please help me to try something else.

Hmm.... it's a long shot, but I'm wondering if undoing the last couple of edits, that were in progress when the 'lights' went out, would help.

OK, first of all you have to "unhide" the grey filmstrip folders in your 'Projects' folder. This requires a simple registry change. Click Start/Run/ and type in "regedit". (without the quotation marks)

Now click "Edit/Find and copy and paste the following into the box and hit "Find Next": 79BC0345-1015-11D2-A299-006008312725

This is what it should look like after the search. Now right click the highlighted folder and hit "rename". Click after the last number and add an asterisk between the 5 and the }.

It should now look like this. That part is done and your grey filmstrip folders should now appear as normal windows folders. (This needs to be done otherwise the next part won't produce any results).

Now click "Start/Search" and click "All files and folders" and type in *.VFO in the top box. (You will want to click "View" on the top of the search window and select "Details" then "View/Arrange Icons by........Modified")

Now assuming you haven't been able to get into your project since you altered that Title the power failure, delete the last file that was Modified on your project and try to open it. (if there are several files with the same time-stamp, you can right click on them and hit "Properties" and that will give you the time-stamp with the 'seconds' added to it)

(if studio crashes again upon opening the project, then it wasn't the right file and it can be restored from the recycle bin.)
